Living in New Smyrna Beach means the ocean and Intracoastal are more than just beautiful backdrops—they’re part of everyday life. And two of our favorite local destinations offer the perfect opportunity to learn more about the incredible ecosystems and wildlife that make this stretch of Florida’s coast so special.
Whether you’re entertaining visiting family, looking for something fun to do with the kids, or simply want to experience our waterways from a new perspective, the Marine Discovery Center in New Smyrna Beach and the Marine Science Center in Ponce Inlet are both worth adding to your list.
Located at 520 Barracuda Boulevard in New Smyrna Beach, the Marine Discovery Center is all about education, conservation and exploration of the Indian River Lagoon. Its programs give visitors an up-close look at one of North America’s most biologically diverse estuaries, home to more than 4,000 species of plants and animals.
One of the best ways to experience it is from the water. Guided kayak eco-tours wind through mangroves, salt marshes and oyster reefs, while pontoon boat tours offer a relaxing way to search for dolphins, manatees, coastal birds and other wildlife alongside certified Florida naturalists.
You don’t have to book a tour to enjoy the center, either. Admission to the campus and grounds is free, with native gardens, a butterfly garden, restored salt marsh, walking areas and Cuda Cove, a nature playscape for children.
Just up the coast in Ponce Inlet, the Marine Science Center offers a different—but equally fascinating—experience.
The center combines marine education with the important work of rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing injured sea turtles and seabirds. Visitors can overlook rehabilitation pools from Turtle Terrace, explore aquariums and educational exhibits, and walk through the Mary Keller Seabird Rehabilitation Sanctuary.
A favorite for families is the aquatic touch pool, where guests can get an up-close look at marine life including cownose rays, Atlantic stingrays, sea urchins and other local species. Outside, the nature trail and observation tower provide another opportunity to explore the coastal environment of Ponce Inlet.
The best part? You really don’t have to choose between them.
Visit the Marine Discovery Center when you want to paddle, cruise and experience the Indian River Lagoon firsthand. Head to the Marine Science Center when you want to learn about local wildlife, conservation and the incredible rehabilitation work happening right here in Volusia County.
Together, they offer a reminder of what makes living in the New Smyrna Beach area so special. Our connection to the water goes far beyond a day at the beach—it’s woven into the wildlife, landscape and lifestyle that make this little piece of Florida unlike anywhere else.
Local Tip: Hours, programs, tours and special events can change seasonally, so check each center’s current calendar before heading out
